Essential DotNetNuke Administration Tips

DNN Advantages

DotNetNuke How To's

When you run a website, the first thing you want is to make website management easy. There is already a lot of work that needs to be done for your business’ online marketing. If your website management is a headache, your efforts to present your business successfully online will suffer. Now, if you are looking to run a data-driven and data rich website, there is no CMS more suited for your website than DotNetNuke CMS. However, you will have to familiarize yourself with the platform and know the many tips and tricks to make the most of it. Here are some administration tips to help you with DNN administration.

$ Alias Can Be Avoided for Good Reasons
When jQuery learners start with DNN, they love to use $ alias. In most cases, they would use the $ alias to get access to certain elements of the page. While this is a powerful way of doing that and even the biggest JavaScript frameworks utilize this $ selector, it can become a headache in future. You might have to enter 5 extra characters when replacing the $ alias but this will give you the peace of mind that you really want. Maybe if you already have many scripts with numerous instances of $ use, it might be better to stick with it.

Optimize Pages for DotNetNuke SEO
DotNetNuke has a fully dedicated section for SEO, which shows the focus of this platform on SEO optimization of your DNN website. Now, when you log in to your DNN administration portal you will find out that your main page is named as “home” by DNN by default. To change this you will need to go into page functions and select “settings”. Once you have clicked that you will be on a page where you can edit information about your home page. Change the page name from “home” to something descriptive that contributes to your website’s DNN SEO.

Making the Static File Size Smaller
Performance of your DotNetNuke platform can suffer due to many different reasons. Sometimes your static files are sized too big for no good reason. Performing compression of these files can help you reduce their sizes to a great degree. Make sure you get rid of the white space that exists in whatever CSS and JS files you have. By compressing the files, you will notice that methods and variables in your JavaScripts have been trimmed to single character names. Furthermore, your images, JS and CSS files should have very late expiration dates so they can be archived.

Use Header Section for JQuery Injection
You can face many problems due to conflicts between ClientAPI, jQuery and DNNMenu. JQuery can meddle with their functioning whenever possible. ClientAPI and DNNMenu do have default configurations where they try to avoid these conflicts but there is a better way of doing that. When your module requires jQuery library reference in it, page header will be the best place to add it. You can include a script reference under “page settings” if you must use jQuery on the page.
